How stable is fluxbox...

I've been using enlightenment in an attempt to ween myself from the teet that is KDE but have been having problems with the stability of the wm. Is fluxbox a great deal more stable, and if not (or even if so) do you have any other recommendations for window managers. My main concerns are compactness and functionality. In reverse order.

Thanks,

Hi, I've been using fluxbox for more then 1 year and I never had one single freeze or anything like that, so for me it's pretty stable and, of course, really fast.
I'm currently using the 0.9.12 version on Slackware 10.1.

I've been using fluxbox for a long time also, it's great. Very stable, I've had a couple of issues with it's compositing and X.org's composite extension but that's pretty bleeding edge stuff. When I use psuedo-transparency it works perfectly. Go for it, it's a great WM!

what is the learning curve on something like fluxbox? And are there more stable window managers out there?

Learning it is very easy, the Fluxbox is pretty straightforward, once you initiated the 'X', just click with the right button of the mouse and a menu will appear with some options, and it will create a .fluxbox/ dir in your home, there will be some files that you can edit to personalise the menus and others special configs.
Go to http://fluxbox.org/docbook.php and read the documentation, is very easy to configure menus, themes and others things on your on.

About others wm you can also try Blackbox (http://blackboxwm.sourceforge.net/), the Fluxbox is based on it, and Openbox (http://icculus.org/openbox/), that I never used.

I hope I've helped.

Yes, never a single problem with Fluxbox : I have been using it both in Mandrake and Debian.

Very good wm in my opinion; I prefer it to any other, but it's just personal !

Fluxbox is the best!!!

While I like KDE because of the awesome graphical modalities, Fluxbox is the smaller, simplest, fastest, mose awesome wm. It will take about a couple ours for you to getto know it, and to customize it. If you want to do more advanced things with fluxbox - the learning curve can be quite brutal, however I found I have only had to look into more advanced things every once in a while.

By the way - the last "stable/official" release is like 9 years old, so download the development version. It's really stable and I don't think you'l have a problem, despite it's being "unnoficial" -Bill

Fluxbox is great. The speed increase has allowed me to do more on my old laptop and has solved the issues I was having in KDE.

I'm using the development version. It is very stable and a lot newer than the 'stable' release.

Yes, it is great for low-end systems - on which KDE would be impossible to work. -Bill
