Can someone please explain step by step how to create a playlist in kaffeine player version 1.2.2??
At my experience level, newbies are screwed.
Current setup:
1) Triple boot Windows, arch 3.9.9-1, and crunchbang. Both linuxes are luks encrypted lvms. Windows is encrypted courtesy of open source encryption. bootloader?: grub, and in virtualbox, geli encrypted raid 10 (gmirror,geli and striping) fluxbox WM, but I cannot for the life of me figure how to create a playlist in Kaffeine.


2) I have never had a problem creating playlist in gnome or xfce using smplayer,totem,gnome-mplayer, vlc xine, or eaxile. I feel sorry for a newbie, holy mother of god.

What I've done to fix the problem:
Over one hour of time lost
Google just indicates that there was a playlist bug in 2010. Google also indicated that files can be dragged from some unlocatable area of kaffeine (the name of which is long, technical and forgotten by me) to the playlist area.
Thanks in advance as this and some sound issues are the only thing keeping me from using kde.

I'm not sure at what point you got stuck. Have you tried clicking on the Playlist tab that appears above "Television" and below "Playback" along the left border of Kaffeine?

Hi there,

I don't really understand what your problem is. I don't know about kaffeine player, either, but I usually create my playlists using a simple text editor. Each playlist entry is one line, URL or local network/filesystem path. Save with extension .m3u, and you're done. Open that playlist file in whatever player you like.

There should be no need to use a text file for a playlist. That would take too long and would mean that the kaffeine media player from KDE is inferior to all current windows and gnome media players with respect to playlist creation. Besides, some of my playlists change too often.

Unlike playlist creation in KDE's kaffeine player, playlist creation in VLC and Gnome is a simple repeatable four step process:

1) Ctl+L
2) right click then select file or directory
3) left click add track or directory
4) navigate to desired track(s) location or navigate to the desired directory's location
Repeat until one's heart is content.

In gnome, ditto for m-player and gnome-mplayer, which both substitute an icon for the “Ctl+L” command found in VLC. I love gnome's simplicity and user friendliness. For the sake of accuracy, playlist creation in gnome-mplayer can also be initiated with the F9 Key.

It is of course your right to report this post, but you've no justification for doing as indicated by the five reasons below and the fact that no forums rule have been broken.

1) Just because I am not saying what you want to hear does not mean that I've violated any forum rules or rules of civility. What's wrong with challenging questions based upon self evident logic and postulation?

2) Asking me to state what step I got stuck at is a waste of time as I never made any progress with playlist creation in kaffeine. If I say I got stuck at step four and we assume that playlist creation is a seven step process, what guarantee is there that I or any other reader of this post completed steps one – three correctly? I'll answer that for you – there is no guarantee. This is why I asked for step-by-step instructions: I wanted to save time and to reduce error possibility for myself and others. In short, had you cooperated with me, a post that benefitted myself and others could have been created yesterday.


3) I asked for step-by-step instructions for creating a playlist in kaffeine. No one has complied. I stated the steps for playlist creation using VLC and a few gnome media players. This tells one exactly how I go about playlist creation. I did this so that you could the process by which I create playlist in media players other than Kaffiene, hardly a reportable offense.

It may also upset KDE enthusiast if I say that I have years of experience with Arch Linux, encrypted LVMs and months of experience with freebsd 8 – 9 (geli encryption, gmirror, and device striping-software raid 10) but I caanot create a playlist in kaffeine player, and I feel sorry for newbies. Although such a statement may cause a KDE enthusiast to bristle, it's hardly against forum rules or civility, although it does take courage to hear and then respond in a helpful manner.

Apparently there are two types of playlist in Kaffeine Player: Temporary and (for lack of a better word) permanent, both will be covered here.

Playlist Creation in Kaffeine
If you have had trouble creating playlist in Kaffeine, ensure that kaffeine occupies at least 70% of the screen, at least until you become familiar with Kaffeine. This was my problem despite my 20/20 vision. I could not see a pertinent feature. Also, unlike kaffeine, most players manage playlist via an icon in the navigation menu. That created more confusion.

Temporary Playlist:
Temporary Playlist disappear when Kaffeine is closed.

To create temporary playlist:

1) Ensure that kaffeine occupies at 70% of the screen, at least until you become familiar with Kaffeine.
2) Left Click the playlist tab in the lower hand corner of Kaffeine player
3) In the upper left hand quadrant of Kaffeine, select “Temporary Playlist”
In the lower left quadrant of Kaffeine, one should see a browser similar to konqueror, pcmanfm or Nemo. If not increase the size of Kaffeine player.
Note: above the 'playlist area' there are four buttons entitled: Repeat, Random, Remove and Clear.
4) Select and then drag the desired media file from the browser located in the lower left quadrant to the 'playlist area' located in the upper right quadrant.
5) Play at will


To create a permanent playlist:
Note: Permanent playlist are permanent until deleted.

1) Ensure that kaffeine occupies at 70% of the screen, at least until you become familiar with Kaffeine.
2) Left Click the playlist tab in the lower hand corner of Kaffeine player
3) In the upper left hand quadrant of Kaffeine, left click the button entitled “+new”
A selection entitled “Unnamed Playlist” will appear somewhere below the “Temporary Playlist”
4) Rename this “Unnamed Playlist” by right-clicking on it. Here, we'll name it “qwerty”
Note: above the 'playlist area' there are four buttons entitled: Repeat, Random, Remove and Clear.
5) Select and then drag the desired media file from the browser located in the lower left quadrant to the 'playlist area' located in the upper right quadrant.
6) Right-click on qwerty and select save. Save to a desired location.
7) Navigate to the desired playlist, right click and select open with Kaffeine. if all has gone well, the newly created playlist should begin playing in Kaffeine.
