Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a black screen the same as standby mode?

If you are writing about having little moving graphics in standby mode rather than a black screen, you need to enable your screensaver. It will be in your Control Center in KDE or in Gnome I believe may be in the toolbox.

Are you talking about in the GUI or in the console/command line? Those are totally different.

It can be done in console. I'll have to find the command though. I'm not a elephant, I can't remember everything.

Post back if you need help with console.

what i mean is after i logout i see gdm, after a while the screen goes black, but my monitor does not recognize that as standby, i think it won't go into standby until it loses the signal from the vid card, what do i have to do to make the monitor go into actual standby mode and not just black

Look in your xf86config file and find the Graphics section. See if yours has the DPMS option like this:

Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier "** NVIDIA (generic) [nv]"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VideoRam 131072
    Option "DPMS" <<----------
    # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection
It may not have that in there. Then you will need to go into the power control and turn it on and set the timings that you want.

My Gentoo did not have that option either. I had to dig to find out what made that work.

Hope that helps.

edit: leave out the <<---------- part. That was my pointer.

But it is true. I poke at the keyboard.

I get there though.

I'm working on getting pics from Mars.
