How do I install Firefox 51.0 on UbuntuMATE 22.04

I need to install an older version of Firefox for compatibility with the Adobe Flash plugin. I'd do my own research on this, but most results are outdated for older versions of UbuntuMATE so asking firsthand seems better. Where do I install Firefox 51.0 and how?

As alternatives, when I wanted to get flash working, I installed the ruffle plugin from firefox add-ons. For sites that didn't work, palemoon still supports the last working version of adobe flash.

I'm actually trying to get Adobe Flash to work on Palemoon. Palemoon supposedly works off of Firefox's plugin directory so I tried installing a version of Firefox with that plugin directory but I still couldn't find it. How did you manage to get Flash working on Palemoon, if you have?

You can install palemoon for ubuntu/debian from here:
https://software.opensuse.org/downlo...ckage=palemoon

The last working version of Flash is 32.0.0.371, get it from here:
https://archive.org/download/flashpl...71_archive.zip

libflashplayer.so needs to be in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
Code:
sudo mkdir -p /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
sudo ln -s /usr/lib64/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
Yes, it works for me. I originally did this after my kid read "Junie B Jones" and it has links for flash games in the back of the book. Tested, and still working today...

@xyzb0rg you should change the topic to something like "how to use adobe flash in 2023 [SOLVED]" for future searchers.

I was following these instructions but I don't have the /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ directory. I tried installing a Firefox version with NPAPI support but it still doesn't have a plugins directory. Does anybody know why I have this problem and how I can fix it?

I guess it doesn't go without saying; you have to make the directory first before putting the file (or simlink) there...

I'll add a mkdir command to my previous post for that incase somebody else reading this is not familiar with file system basics... but it's not like I told you step by step anything else.... but anyways hopefully that solves it for you, assuming you realize you gotta unzip the zipfile and extract the correct tarfile first, and for that simlink I suggested to work you'd have to put it in /usr/lib64/flash-plugin/ in the first place... if you use /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/ like the installation instructions in the readme say then you'd have to simlink that instead of course, etc.

I have no experience with Linux systems so apologies if my responses/questions are incompetent. I checked and I have no /usr/lib64/flash-plugin/, the only thing in /usr/lib64/ is unrelated to flash. I can't edit anything to do with /usr/ since I don't have ownership and I'm unsure of how to get around that that (anything I search for is difficult for me to understand).

No problem! Let me give you step by step instructions, that you can just paste one line at a time.

#1: Add repository & Install Pale Moon from it
Code:
echo 'deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/stevenpusser:/palemoon-GTK3/xUbuntu_22.04/ /' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/palemoon-GTK3.list
curl -fsSL https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:stevenpusser:palemoon-GTK3/xUbuntu_22.04/Release.key | gpg --dearmor | sudo tee /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/home_stevenpusser_palemoon-GTK3.gpg > /dev/null
sudo apt update
sudo apt install palemoon
#2: Download & Extract Adobe Flash Plugin to Appropriate Folder for Pale Moon
Code:
wget https://archive.org/download/flashplayerarchive/pub/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp_32.0.0.371_archive.zip
unzip fp_32.0.0.371_archive.zip 32_0_r0_371/flashplayer32_0r0_371_linuxpep.x86_64.tar.gz
sudo mkdir -p /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
sudo tar xzvf 32_0_r0_371/flashplayer32_0r0_371_linuxpep.x86_64.tar.gz -C /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

sudo tar xzvf 32_0_r0_371/flashplayer32_0r0_371_linuxpep.x86_64.tar.gz -C /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
This all works up until "wget https://archive.org/download/flashpl...71_archive.zip". When I execute that command it comes up with

"Resolving archive.org (archive.org)... 207.241.224.2
Connecting to archive.org (archive.org)|207.241.224.2|:443... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 404 Not Found

If I try to download the zip myself without commands and execute the next line of code you instructed it comes up with
"unzip: cannot find or open fp_32.0.0.371_archive.zip, fp_32.0.0.371_archive.zip.zip or fp_32.0.0.371_archive.zip.ZIP.".

Sorry about that! You must copy the full URL for that link. You are using an abbreviated version with ellipses in the middle. This seems like some bug in the forum software, not sure why it's abbreviating the link, when I hover over it I see full thing in my address bar.....

edit: I just edited it and removed the url tags, now it shows the whole thing so you can copy/paste easily. sorry about that! The forum automatically added those url tags, which seems dumb thing to do in a codeblock....

That actually should work too - if you do it from your downloads folder. You'd have to "cd Downloads" first. With wget, it will just download it to whatever folder you're in already.

Thanks. I thought I was copying the full url but I guess I wasn't paying attention. Everything in the updated code worked with no errors but after rebooting Palemoon, Flash did not come up in the plugins section (nor on Firefox). I assumed I had to run the first command you sent (sudo ln -s /usr/lib64/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/) but after running that it gives me a strange error. "ln: failed to create symbolic link '/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so': File exists". I checked the directory and the file is there, but broken. I don't have the permission to do anything to it.

No, you don't have to simlink it, since those step-by-step instructions I posted were complete and extracted it directly into the plugins folder.

It should be listed in plugins section automatically. Did you have palemoon running when you extracted the plugin (.so file)? If so, restart palemoon.

I did have palemoon open while extracting it, but I've restarted since then and it still doesn't show up on the plugins page. Would the broken simlink be whats stopping it? It was in there before I extracted the plugin into that directory.
