how do I eject unmounted dvd?

I inserted a dvd, learned how to watch it with mplayer, then leared how much easier it is with xine, then decided to try with another dvd.

In gnome I right click the desktop Icon for the dvd and coose 'eject'-->Error message: unable to eject the media, last error, invalid argument

$umount /dev/hdd
umount: /dev/hdd is not mounted (according to mtab)

$umount /media/cdrom/
umount: /media/cdrom is not mounted (according to mtab)

How do I get the dvd drive to open??

you could try

$eject /dev/cdrom

or

$eject /dev/dvdrom

in console. Works with SUSE at least

I noticed when I looked at the dvd in Nautilus that only root had access. I tried mounting it first to umount later, but still no result. Then did 'eject /dev/dvd" as root: that worked! Thanks for your post!!

Did you try the button on the front of the drive? If you didn't mount the disc then linux shouldnt've locked the tray, unless it's still in use by a program.

I did, but that didn't work, so I posted. Problem is solved though (as per my last post) but thanks for your interest anyway.
