How can I encrypt a db field using phpmyadmin?

Hello, I'm running a faily basic server with apache, php, and mysql, and I use phpmyadmin to control the mysql server. This is simply because I don't know SQL, and don't really have time to get over the learning curve right now.

I am trying to install some software that requires a database with which is may store usernames and passwords, but I have to make one of the fields in the database encrypted to securely store the passwords. So apparently I need to use AES encryption, but try as I might, I cannot find any way to enable AES on a field using phpmyadmin. For that matter, I can't even figure out how to enable MD5 encryption.

Can anyone help me? Is phpmyadmin just unable to perform these operations, or am I just missing it?
