if partition magic is failing, i think that is what you meant, you should be able to use other utilities to reformat and recreate a partition. are you trying to create another linux partition or another windows.. ??

if everything is failing to reformat your linux partition, then try booting up with the linux cd to start the installation, act like your going to install it with a custom install, when you get to the disk druid section, wipe all all partitions, make windows partition, let it write to the drive then restart your machine taking out the cd, you should then be able to install whatever and reformat your whole drive..

if it is still doesn't work, then ask your friend who can ask his/her co-workers and so on if he/she has the Win2k installation floppies or if they can borrow you for a 5 mins win2k CD (so you can make floppies yourself, if you of course don't have one). Boot from W2k floppies and in some point it will ask you where do you intent to put win2k (of course you won't install it), and it will present you with your HD partitions, the linux one will be listed as unknown delete it and if you want FAT32 on it just format it using FAT32. That's all.

As a piece of advice to Sarah. You would be have to go through hoops to get Samba working, if you have had trouble with a simple Linux install.

My advice would be to get a version of Mandrake, which I have found is probably the most newbie friendly (I am making an assumption here that you are a newbie, Hey I am one myself).

Fool around with it a bit and then think of Samba. If you are planning on using Mandrake Linux, you won't be needing Partition Magic. Mandrake detects windows, asks you whether you want to keep it, remove it or install linux on the fat32 partition (which would be a wrong choice if you plan to do any serious stuff with Linux, but is okay as long as you only want to learn the basics).

Sarah,

Were you able to re-partition your drive? If you're still having trouble, checkout www.aefdisk.com. There's a untility there that has wiped any partition have ever created.

Let me know if you need further help.
