How are threads implemented in RedHat EL 3 ?

Are threads implemented as processes on Linux ?

Does this mean that all linux implementations (redhat, etc) will implement a thread as a process ? Does this mean that it is not possible to have process-managed threads in Linux ? (or to put it another way, threads cannot exist in the context of a process).

Thanks,
Colm.
