ho to split data to two disks

Hi

env:machine with 2 hard disk on the same ide bus
usually i splitted data around 2 disks creating partition and mount points......
is there a way to automatically split data on the two disks
no matter about where data goes....
i raise the question because partitioning let me some unused space
on each partition.

i hope the question is clear.

thanks in advance

any help will be appreciated
Maurizio

Take a look at LVM (Logical Volume Manager) that can build a data space from several disks.

how to check striping

Hi...

first..thanks for the suggestion .

i set up lvm and i installed mandriva .....
operating system see the two disk as only one...

a question :

LVM can manage the two disks as disk1 + disk2
filling disk2 only when disk1 is full
or it can stripe data across the two disk.

how can i check if data are striped across the two disks ?

thanks in advance

Maurizio

You can choose one of two modes: linear or data strip.
Read the Chapter 3. Anatomy of LVM, subsection 3.7, mapping modes (linear/striped).

I don't know how to check if data is stripped. You can at least, get info about how the volume groups were created, I mean, linear or striped. Use the cmd line tools to get all info you want or to create a volume group with settings other than default.

The default mode is linear.

striped or linear

Hi ..
thanks for the answer

Mandriva installation dialog do not permit me to choose between linear or striping..
i only heard the rumor of the second drive heads when the swap space is mounted..

so my suspect about linear....
your answer confirms my suspects...

now i have to find another tool to format partitions ..tools located into a bootable cdrom....

i have heard in the past about qparted as one of the best...

i will search it or something similar on one of my (few..) bootable disks

Maurizio
