High Xorg CPU usage in Ubuntu

Running amd64 Ubuntu on an amd64 3200+.

I get really high Xorg CPU usage. Ranging from anywhere between 10-20% when completely idle.

I've seen one bug report (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/dapper/+bug/44912) that mentions it, and gives a solution some people have had luck with on 686 kernels (also switching to 386 aparently fixes it), however it doesn't work on amd64.

Anyone have any ideas? Know of any other threads I didn't see?

Just switched from Gentoo KDE, where idle was almost always under 1%...

some people seem to report good results with
echo 1 > /sys/module/processor/parameters/max_cstate

you might want to compile your own vanilla kernel in case unbuntu did something stupid (patches) to theirs.
if your cpu is not dual core you might want to turn off SMP.
