Hi all, I have a question for you: I'm trying to upgrade to the next LinuxMint but it comes out a warning saying that it may be a risk and that I have to check such and such before upgrading.
Is that really a risk?
Thank you

In general, maintainers do not have extra warnings laying around that they put in just because they have them to use up. If they put in a warning, it is because under some conditions things go south and they want you to know before you take the risk so you can take steps to prevent issues.

You do not mention what versions of Mint are involved, what process you are following for the upgrade, any details about your applications or hardware, or the exact nature of the warning. This makes any specific advice nearly impossible. Have you any detail to share that might help?

Federsmiths,

Welcome to LQ forums.

Heed the warning!

Backup all your personal data to an external drive and do a fresh installation, preferably with a separate home partition.

Welcome to LQ,

Perhaps you can obtain a picture or write down what it is warning you about. Sorry but there's not enough information here for anyone to advise you properly.

What version of Linux Mint do you currently have? The next version of Linux Mint is anticipated to be released this June, so you may want to wait till it is released.

As another person wrote, back-up all your user data before doing anything. Also you should plan on creating a separate home partition with the new install. Partitioning/Home/Moving

You may have tried to update to the Linux Mint 20 BETA release, which should get its final release later this month:

Work continues on Linux Mint 20 “Ulyana” which is planned for June this year.
but currently the latest version still is 19.3 "Tricia".

A BETA release always is a bit of a risk.

Regardless of your distro, whenever you do an on-line version upgrade, there is always a risk that something might go wrong. That's why it is recommended that you back up any crucial data.

For example, your internet connection might drop mid-upgrade. (Mine dropped today and I had to reboot my modem.)

That said, I've weathered many successful on-line version upgrades.

(For a long time, the Mint maintainer held out against allowing on-line version upgrades. A couple of years ago, he allowed them.)
