help with installing perl 5.8.8 alongside 5.8.7 for dvdrip

Hi.

I am using ubuntu 6.06 and would like to install perl 5.8.8 alongside the 5.8.7 that came default. I would like to ditch 5.8.7 all together but I am pretty sure that most of my apps would fail. I want to install the latest version of dvdrip (0.98.1) which needs the newest perl. I need some help with getting it to install without trashing 5.8.7.

any help or direction would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Seperate install ?

Don't think I can be too much help here, I am sure there is a better way than what I am gonna describe.

If you only need Perl 5.8.8 for a single app or just a few the following might work.

Setup a local user installation of Perl so that Perl will sit somewhere like $HOME/system/usr/local/

You should then be able to export this location using the PERL5LIB variable, you may also need to tell the app you are installing where to find it. You could then install your app into $HOME/system/usr, so if you are compiling from source this would normally be done with something like; ./configure --prefix=$HOME/system/usr. Then if you export your local lib and bin directories into your PATH variable etc., you should be able to run your app with Perl 5.8.8.

What I have described above is probably not detailed enough to explain fully how to go about this, however if you want to go down the route I have described just say and I will give more detailed instructions.

Duno if you have checked the CPAN/Perl documentation but I would guess installing multiple versions of Perl would be an FAQ.

I guess it is a bit easier. If you install perl it will ask you where to install it. Put it in your home directory or in /usr/local if the current version does not reside there (probably not). To call the interpreter you just have to set the first line of the script to
#!/usr/local/perlversion -w
so the right version will be invoked.
