help getting grub working (or anyother bootloader)

i'm very new to grub and i'm trying to get it to work after many hours of trying to get lilo to work i just gave up, but now i see 2.6.2 is out and i have to add the appletalk module so i guess i have to tackle the boot loader prob

right now i run grub-install /dev/hde, it says it installed fine, then i boot and it says stage1.5 loading please wait (or something like that) but it never seems to get past the please wait, anyone have a guess as to what the problem is?

also for lilo someone suggested adding a map-drive=blah to=blah to the config file but that gives syntax errors

and after some looking around i began to wonder if the problem is that i'm booting with the bootloader on hda, installing a new bootloader onto hde, then trying to boot hde by changing the bios to boot from hde (the bios setting doesn't make a difference to the kernel, but does it matter to the bootloader?)

and here is the menu.1st file for grub

---start--of--menu.1st--file-------
default=0
timeout=5
title Linux
root (hd1,1)
kernel /boot/linux ro root=/dev/hde2
---end--of--menu.1st--file-------

the kernel is in /boot/ on /dev/hde2

If you are having troubles with a secondary IDE controller card here is another thread today which may or may not have some useful information in it:
