Help building/installing imlib2 loaders under FC4

Before I start, be warned that I'm new to Linux and I just installed Fedora Core 4 yesterday.

I'm trying to get Eterm installed, but the rpm says I need to install the imlib2 loaders for jpeg and png images (a noble goal). I already have the imlib2 installed for running enlightenment, but no loaders. I downloaded the tarball off sourceforge, but I'm having some trouble building it. Following the readme's instructions, I unpacked the tarball, ran ./configure, and then attempted to make, but it said there's no makefile. I see in the directory that there's a Makefile.am and a Makefile.in, but I have no idea how to use them.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'm a programmer, so I'm not afraid of code, but I'm not very familiar with the *nix environment.
