Help administering cups printer: adding Acer Limpus netbook to existing network

I recently purchased an Acer Aspire One (AAO)netbook 512 MB 8GB running Limpus. I have connected this to an mixed network which successfully uses CUPS to manage shared printers. I cannot get the new Limpus machine to print.

The network consists of a ADSL modem which has a 4 port hub and wireless capability. To this hub is wired an OS X 10.4.9 iMac with two printers attached to it. Also wired to the hub is another OS X 10.5 mac, and a dual boot Ubuntu 8.04 WIN XP machine. All of these computers automatically discover and share the two printers attached to the iMac using native CUPS support through the gui print interfaces. The xp dual boot finds the printers through Bonjour which is apple's CUPS program for Windows. Also connecting to this network wirelessly is another iBook and another xp computer. Both of these also automatically share the printers attached to the iMac using same techniques as the wired computers.

It is a tribute to CUPS that I have never had to look beyond the GUI print setup routines on all six of the existing machines on this network to get printing working flawlessly. The Limpus based AAO has provided me with the opportunity to learn lots about the Acer user interface, the XFCE desktop, Limpus, and CUPS.

When I tried to set up my AAO I got a "CUPS printer error" error message trying to set up a printer. Thanks to some help I got in the AAO forum (http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/v...hp?f=17&t=4211) I updated Fedora and CUPS and then got into the CUPS administration via Firefox on http://localhost:631. Here I can see here that Limpus is receiving the printer broadcasts from the iMac as to the identity of its attached printers. The problem is that when I go to print a test page to either printer I get the following Firefox error: Server not found. Firefox can't find the server at XXX-computer.local.

To troubleshoot this I opened CUPS administration on the Ubuntu 8.04 machine which is able to share the printers. Its printer information is:

Description: MFC-7420
Location: Jill's G4
Printer Driver: Brother MFC-7420 CUPS v1.1 on jill-cavans-computer.local
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, not published.
Device URI: ipp://jill-cavahs-computer.local:631/printers/MFC_7420

On the Limpus machine, which is not working, the information is exactly the same as above.

Does anyone have any ideas where I could look next? or what may be broken?

This is just a stab in the dark, have you updated the /etc/hosts file with all the IP addresses and names of the machines on the network?

The server not found leads me to believe it may not be updated or correct.

Thanks Camorri, I'm in the process of studying the CUPS documentation as to the sequence of steps/files involved in proccessing a print request from an application through cups to the printer. The cups doco looks pretty good. I'll update the forum with my results
