You can try sending an email to tech support of the DVD drive manufacturer. Unless it's some kind of wild unknown dvd drive, you shouldn't have trouble with the generic drivers.
yeah, my fairly new sony dvd burner works fine here, with generic drivers, though still using old ide-scsi or whatever it's called in kernel 2.4, won't be going to 2.6 for a while i think.
We recently purchased a LG Burner that does DVD+-R(W) and RAM which worked perfectly using generic drivers. DVD+-R(W) requires ide-scsi however DVD-RAM works if you just mount the drive read/write (i.e. without the ro option).
I dont know if what I'm saying is true but here goes.
Practically all IDE drives work the same way, they don't need special drivers. There are a couple of basic drivers for the different types but as long as your BIOS detects them & your OS has general support for IDE CD Rom drives, the OS won't have a problem. It just comes down to the software that you use to have support for them.
Here's an example from experience. ABout 4 years ago (I think), I bought a top of the line burner, and it didn't need drivers to isntall, it just detected it as a cd-rom drive. The bios accepted it and windows didn't ask for drivers (although it didn't come with any). However, Nero wouldn't detect it. Problem, eh? That burner was useless. Luckily it shipped with some crappy brand new burning software. When a new version of nero came out, it worked fine.
