Angry Hard drive; file system error;automate fsck

We are using RedHat 9 2.4.20-8

On boot after the linux kernel begins the boot we get:

/var/local (/dev/hda12) contains a file system with errors, check forced

Error reading block 327682 short read while doing inode scan.
/var/local: Login as root and RUN fsck manually. (without -a or -p)
Or use Ctrl+D to continue booting.

If Ctrl+D is used, no matter how many times, it reboots and comes back to the same place. The disk check for ext3, journaling executes whether or not you answer yes to the disk check question.

Our problem is astronauts cannot have and do not have root.

We finally entered root and ran "fsck" with no options. fsck worked and fixed the system.

We need to give the astronauts an option to run fsck without being root. They are busy doing other tasks and problems like this uses their limited time.

I have searched these forums, google, and the RedHat site and cannot find where this script or program exists. I even installed the kernel code and could not find the messages there.

Can anyone tell me where this program or script exists so that I can update it to give the astronauts a choice to run fsck? The old Solaris OS we had gave the choice.

I think you could add the e2fsck program to a new group and add the astronauts to this group so only they have exec permissions for e2fsck........
