GRUB missing + problems installing it again

Hello

I have been googling for two days now after installing Windows 7 and losing GRUB in the process. In my case the situation is a bit different.

I originally had a setup like this

300GB hard drive, 2 Windows XP partitions
300GB hard drive, 2 Windows XP partitions
1TB hard drive, Ubuntu 9.10

So as I wanted to try out the Windows 7 I removed the 300GB hard drives and installed a new 1TB hard drive to their place. Unfortunately it would seem like my GRUB was installed on one of those two 300GB hard drives. I am not sure if this is the case as I am not that good with Linux yet, but I think that is the case.

For starters, here is some info I collected using the Super GRUB Disc (or something like that)

natural linux-ide linux-scsi grub hurd size
1 hda sda (hd0) hd0 3GB
2 hdb sdb (hd1) hd1 931GB
3 hdc sdc (hd2) hd2 931GB

2:
N IDE SCSI GRUB HURD TYPE SIZE OS
1 hdb1 sdb1 (hd1,0) hd1s1 HPFS/NTFS 100MB WINDOWS
2 hdb2 sdb2 (hd1,1) hd1s2 HPFS/NTFS 931GB WINDOWS

3:
N IDE SCSI GRUB HURD TYPE SIZE OS
1 hdc1 sdc1 (hd2,0) hd2s1 ext2fs 922GB Ubuntu 9.10 \n \]
5 hdc5 sdc5 (hd2,4) hd2s5 SWAP 9GB

BOOTING '<---- BACK (Error 6 is OK)'

adhocerror

Error 6: Mismatched or corrupt version of stage1/stage2
Press any key to continue...

And as I booted to Ubuntu 8.04 live cd with an USB stick and tried searching the stage1 file

grub> find /boot/grub/stage1

Error 15: File not found

I believe I need to use the grub-install command now. How do I do it?

I believe that I need to mount my Ubuntu partition somehow. I tried commands such as

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sdc /mnt/root
mount: special device /dev/sdc does not exist
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/root
mount: special device /dev/sdc1 does not exist
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sdc5 /mnt/root
mount: special device /dev/sdc5 does not exist
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sda /mnt/root
mount: /dev/sda already mounted or /mnt/root busy
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ umount /dev/sda
umount: /dev/sda is not mounted (according to mtab)
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sdb /mnt/root
mount: special device /dev/sdb does not exist
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sdc /mnt/root
mount: special device /dev/sdc does not exist

I am in need of some aid.
