Talking Goal: Multi seat, 2 terminals, X.org configuration

Please help me with this

Goal: Multi seat, 2 terminals

Using the following:-

H/W:
AMD X2 (x86_64),
ATI Radeon X1200 (Integrated into Gigabyte Motherboard),
1 D-Sub & 1 DVI-D-Sub,(same PCI bus address)
1 PS/2 Keyboard, 1 USB Keyboard,
2 USB Mice,
1 LCD monitor(1400x900), 1 CRT (1024x768)

S/W:
Ubuntu 7.10(Gutsy Gibon), x86_64(i.e AMD64 version)
fglrx(or whatever you suggest)
X (7.x)
GDM

I have been following all possible guides
(example Netpatia,),
the furthest I have gotten is configuring extended desktop (by editing Xorg.conf)

But i get a functional desktop on 1 display, and a blank extended X on the other display
(symptom:: when i move my mouse from the fully functional display to the extended display, i see the old X style mouse curser instead of Gnome themed one, but the screen is blank & i cannot drag windows onto it)

even if i ignore this and move to further steps (editing GDM.conf) i get a crashing X server/xephyr etc, with both ubuntu's Xephyr and the binary taken from your suggested source.

looking forward to any pointers/help

thx

Jojo

I'm getting conflicting impressions about the goal and the problem you are having.

So, are you trying to setup a multi-head display (using two displays from one workstation), or are you trying to setup two workstations, each with it's own display, running on one machine?

This is required by step 3 of one of the guides being followed,

netpatia:Step 3

If everything was OK, when you log into your computer, you should have either two independent adjacent desktops (Xinerama disabled) or a bigger desktop extended through the two monitors (Xinerama enabled)

this is useless

this is useless

What you are describing is using 2 seperate gfx cards,
this has always been possible, even before

I am talking about driving 2 crtcs independently
while these 2 independent crtcs belong to 1 gfx only

Yes, of course !
I wished to draw attention to a new opportunity.
The goal of 3D Multiseat: to provide independent work 2-4 users from one case without restriction in the use of 3D acceleration. To play DirectX 9 games using wine-1.0, for example, Heroes of Might and Magic 5 (HMM5), WarHammer 40k (WH40k), Serious Sam 2 and others are not impeding each other.
And with new, modern hardware.
