Gmail making threats

I run Slack15 and Seamonkey Mail with gmail
Have been for 10 years or more.
recently google sent me this email.
.........................................
Subject:You may lose access to some of your third-party apps
To help keep your account secure, Google will no longer support the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account using only your username and password. Instead, you’ll need to sign in using Sign in with Google or other more secure technologies, like OAuth 2.0. Learn moreWhat do you need to do?
Email software, like Outlook 2016 or earlier, has less secure access to your Gmail. Switch to Office 365, Outlook 2019 or newer, or any other email software where you can sign in using Sign in with Google

Oh dear no more gmail which email server should I switch to.

That is not a threat, and does not say no more gmail.

It is an informative note about certain insecurities and how google is reacting to make your account more secure.

Read what it says, think about if or how it affects you, then take appropriate action.

My gmail account, using the chrome browser, has required 2-factor authentication for some time now. It uses text, email, or a push notification to my phone or tablet as the second method of authentication.

waynelloydsmith,

If you wish to change from Gmail then I can recommend the free version of ProtonMail:

What does this comment have to do with my post? I am lost.
I have never used an old mail client like SeaMonkey, but can speak in reference to the message you posted.

If SeaMonkey is one of the affected "third party clients" then it may affect you. It is up to you to decide the appropriate action.

If you are affected it does not mean no gmail, it only means you may need to select a different client to access it. The message gives a couple suggestions, as well as my comment about using the chrome browser. OTOH, if you are unable to decide upon a replacement client then you may be in trouble with email. It is still in your ball park to decide.

I am lost too...

As far as I know Seamonkey supports OAuth2 authentication. There were some issues awhile back so make sure you are running the latest version.

If you have something against 2 factor authentication, then I guess you have to move to some other mail technology.

IMO, if you are not in the military or you are not in some mission critical situation, then you don’t need that much security.
Just use some very long password and you should be fine.
The world is a big place with billions of people. The chances that a hacker is interested in your email is low.
The tech world seems to have gone security crazy lately. Remember how every tech news site and youtube channel was non stop talking about Spectre and Meltdown?

If you are worried about security, then don’t send your tax forms across the internet. Don’t log into your bank account. In fact, banks should not be connected to the internet.
(I’m just giving example)

Lately, I have been watching videos from the channel “Rob Braxman Tech”
Example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RXs1e7FcJg
Length = 20:08

I don’t know if it is in that video or in another one but basically he says, the goal is to prevent people from making throw away accounts. Google wants to know exactly who you are and even though you might be able to create multiple mail accounts and multiple youtube accounts, they want to uniquely identify you.
It’s not just Google of course. Keep in mind that companies copy each other.

I felt such a sensation of relief when i deleted "my" Facebook account. I suspect it would also feel satisfying to delete "my" Gmail account.

The short version is this: If you use Gmail, you must accept their TOS.

Otherwise, otherwise (to quote Dorothea Day).

I pick up my mail with fetchmail. Their users have noticed Gmail's policy. Its authors have responded that OAuth2 support may not arrive before Gmail enforces the requirement, it being a volunteer project. As much as I like Eric Raymond, I may need to switch to a different mail-retrieval utility. Has anyone a recommendation?

Can confirm - both were very satisfying.

I now pay 1€/month for email - bets euro spent ever!

Anyhow, for OP: I believe the answer to your "question" is in post #6!

Much is better than GMail.

I cannot but contemplate the number of problems described like “When I bend my arm around my back to hold this fire-extinguisher up
in the air, standing on a pole, then punch my head against a wall, I just found out it hurts”.

Maybe do something else.

But is it your arm that hurts, or your head?

Same issue here. I've been using Sylpheed for years even though it is not being actively maintained. I'd like to keep using it. There is nothing in my emails so secret that it requires 2FA.

The question here is, where do we go? I'm considering AOL or Yahoo to replace Gmail, but I don't want to make a big switch and find in 6 months that they are making the same requirements.
