I am interested in using gkrellm to monitor remote systems, but soon using ssh to export the display might be to slow, I was wondering if there was a kind of plugin or something for gkrellm where it monitors data from a remote system without the remote system actually sending X rendering information to the local xserver.

any ideas? if not is there alternat oss available that can do this?

...if not I might have to make my own... but will sourceforge allow me to have yet another project? lol maybe I need to finish the current ones first ;-)

Have a google around for 'gkrellmd'. As the name suggests, it's a demon which runs on the machine to be monitored, which can be connected to by gkrellm (using the -s <server> option).
