No, not with what you're doing. When you edit it, it's downloading the file locally. Then with kate (or whatever), editing that local file. The only way the changes can get back to the 'origin' server, is to re-upload it.
There are options, though. You could export the remote directory as an NFS or Samba share, then connect to it as you would any other network-attached drive. Fire up your editor, and edit it, since it'll be a 'local' file (that is, a file on a drive, attached to your local system), then.
