ok so i am trying to get my install of gentoo to work now but when i try to do
killer: # emerge -auv kde
it gets stuck on poppler and i have tried
killer: # USE='-poppler' emerge -a kde
and what do you know it still tries to emerge poppler-0.4.3-utils.patch.gz (that is what it is)
so here i am wondering how i am going to get this to work by the 9th because i need it working by then
We will possibly need to see the error messages that you get when it errors out and quits compiling.
Also, there seems to be several threads on forums.gentoo.org about poppler. I did a search and found 3 pages worth. Maybe your solution lies there also.
#1 If you don't want a packge to install, you need to put that packge in the package.mask file under /etc/portage. You'll likely have to update your environment and possibly clear out the portage cache.
#2 This may be because I've got an up-to-date KDE, but I don't see the USE flag of poppler. If poppler is a package, not a USE flag, than adding the -poppler won't do anything. USE flags enable support for a feature, not packages or dependancies.
emerge gnome should get you the gnome desktop, however there are steps that should be taken (Xorg first, then window manager). There used to be a gnome-light, but I think that has been deprecated. As for others, there are guides on gentoo's website for KDE,Gnome,XFCE, and any other window manager you can think of. One of the great things about gentoo is their documentation.
