Gentoo linux with kernel 2.6

I want to install gentoo linux soon, but when reading the docs I saw that the "gentoo" kernel is still 2.4. The "smp" kernel would be with 2.6, but is it stupid to install it on a single processor machine?

I would definitely prefer the 2.6 kernel, because I know how much faster it is from using fedora core 2 compared to redhat9..

you compile a fresh 2.6 kernel from the gentoo-devel sources provided.

that way you can customize the kernel to your likings (including stripping out smp support)

I'd recommend making some friends in the gentoo irc channel before you try the install - a gentoo install isn't easy compared to FC2

Instead of using 2.4 sources when you are supposed to emerge 2.4 sources just go into /usr/portage/sys-kernel/development-sources and grab 2.6.7 instead. Or just use wget to get sources off of kernel.org
