GDM keeps trying to open a new X session.

Recently, I decided to start using GDM instead of XDM. It all starts up fine, but when I try and log in as my normal user the screen goes black and it gives me a promp on vt8 about already having an X session open. Since when was GDM meant to try and open a new X session when I'm just logging in normally? This happens no matter what I choose from the session list. It works fine when I log in as root, as well as when I use another login manager (XDM or Entrance).

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Update: I tried obliterating my /etc/X11 folder and re-emerging xorg and GDM (this is on my Gentoo desktop), but it's done absolutely nothing. Still no ideas? This thing has me stumped, which rarely happens for this long.
