gcc problem

alright i am trying to install samba again, after quitting the other day

i tried the rpms but they read the headers and then stop; no errors or problems with dependicies; it just closes

i am pretty sure its not installed either

anyway, i got the tar.gz and estracted it to my home dir. i am reading the unix_install.html from docs and it says to ./configure from the source directory of samba. so i cd to /samba/source and when i ./configure it gives this error:

loading cache ./config.cache
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH

I have gcc version 3.2.2, i think; by looking in usr/lib/gcc-lib

please help

You didn't install the developmental pacakges. Use the package management tool (redhat-config-packages) and install them and you may want kernel-sources is installed as well.

# Find running kernel version
uname -r

# What compiler version do I have installed
gcc -v
gcc --version

# What is the running kernel and compiler installed
cat /proc/version

# Find X server version
X -showconfig
