Can I have various versions of gcc at the same time??

I want to run Xara Xtreme. It needs libstdc++.so.5. So does Seamonkey to install. I seem to have gcc 6 and libstdc++6

Is it ok to install both??

* Debian : No problem, you can have all (5)
compilers, gcc / g++, if you wish.
( That's why they are there.)

Required versions of libstdc++ : It also should be
possible to install those without installing g++ ?

Example using "other compilers" :
'./configure CC=gcc-4.1 CXX=g++-3.4'
....

Yes. In this case the requirement is not the gcc compiler but a shared object (library). It is very common for the majority of Linux OSs to have an older version of libstdc++ installed for compatibility reasons. In Debian the package is called libstdc++5, whereas other distributions call it compat-libstdc++. You can safely install it without any problem: some applications will look for it, other will simply ignore about its presence.
