Unhappy gcc 3.3.1 configure: unable to determine size of short


I am running slackware 8.1 and am trying to upgradd gcc 2.95.2 to gcc 3.3.1. however, when i run configure, is aborts with an error saying that it is unable to determine the size of a short. please help!
