Gcc

Hello again everyone, hope all r doing fine today! I am trying to install GCC on Slack 10, and i am getting the following error msg:

loading cache ./config.cache
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnuoldld
checking target system type... i686-pc-linux-gnuoldld
checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnuoldld
checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/ginstall -c
./configure: line 2332: cc: command not found
*** The command 'cc -o conftest -g conftest.c' failed.
*** You must set the environment variable CC to a working compiler.

Obviously it is looking for a C compiler which is what I am trying to install, what is the work around to get GCC to instal. TKS in advance for all ur help!

If you are running configure then you are trying to compile GCC from source.

You cannot install GCC from source without at least some kind of ISO C-90 compiler to hand. This is because GCC is itself written in C

If you want to compile GCC from source, you really do need to read the instructions: http://gcc.gnu.org/install/

I recommend installing one of the binary distributions of GCC. You can install it with a non-standard prefix, then using that to compile GCC. Or just stick with the binary.

Slack-current and C compiler

Good Day to all, best wishes and prayers go out to Pat!!! I've been out of pocket for a few weeks and just found out of his illness. I started to work on my Slack_current box and to my surprise as my quick little post implied yesterday there is no C compiler in Slack 10. I have not found a binary compiler yet. I read the install page on the gnu site to no avail. How r u supposed to compile packages from src if their is no compiler? Would appreciate any and all help in this matter. Once again TKS in advance!!!

Sure there is a C compiler distributed with Slackware 10, GNU GCC. The packages are in the Slackware tree in the d directory. http://slackware.mirrors.tds.net/pub...0/slackware/d/

For compiling C code, you'll need binutils & gcc at a minimum. But you'll likely want more than that.
