Games in Linux

Hey,

I'm wondering if there is a way I can take games for windows and make them run in linux? I recently ran into some nasty things with windows xp and would love and gladly say goodbye to the evil empire on my machine. Although I have some games that I purchased for windows that are good games and I would not like to not be able to play them

Any suggestions? I understand that because they are for windows I am probably wasting my time trying to find a way, but I'm ignorant about it and don't know if anyone has managed to do it.

As Ozzy Osborne once said, "Wine is fine, but Cedega's quicker." Well...he would've said that if he'd been singing about Linux.

And don't forget about the Native Linux support for several games..

The entire Quake series
The Doom Series
The UT series
Neverwinter nights
Etc.. Can all run natively in Linux

i have used Cedega and i can say it works rather well for the most part for the games it supports. sadly even though it is a pay for service, you do not get pay for service.

by that i mean even though i paid to use their product and they claim to support the paying customer by working with them to make more applications (games) work with their software, they refuse to work on anything old. so if you have some old games, or kids games forget it and stick with XP and just dual boot for when you want to play games.

if it is something new (less then 1yr old) and is extreemly popular then by all means pay for it as they will bend over backwards to get a fix out as fast as possible for those newer games but will ignore for months on end older games.

now IIRC wine even has support for more and more games including games like WoW (world of warcraft) and wine is FREE were Cedega is $5 per/mo.

so its a toss up.

Lol

Lets put it this way. I'm a novice at linux and have alot to learn yet. I want to surround myself in it and ditch windows for good, but I'm not sending 50 bucks in the hole because I can't play my video game.

I ask you, will it support Morrowind Elder Scrolls 3 and Oblivion Elder Scrolls 4

I don't know which it you mean, Wine or Cedega. Check out their respective websites.

best bet is to go to their sites and look around to see how well those 2 are supported. could not tell you. even if they are not, you can always dual boot just for the games. its not that hard to do.

No Dual Boot

I just had my computer dual booted with Linux Fedora core 3 and Windows XP. I just got totally "ripped out" by windows and almost lost alot of data on my harddrive, including stuff stored on my linux partition. I will not dual boot, I'm sick of the problems that windows brings upon me and the problems that you face with a dual boot computer.

windows can not touch a linux partition unless you are using FAT32 or have installed some software that allows you to browse linux partitions from windows. so not exactly sure what happened with your hardware.

i agree, i HATE windows for all of the nightmares too, but for gaming i dual boot or i just don't play games that i can not get working properly in Cedega.

Bye Bye Windows

I ditched windows and downloaded Ubuntu's Dapper Drake. Love it, I ended up choosing Cedega because its developed specifically for running games in linux and that it is indeed faster. Some games run faster using Cedega then they did while running windows.

Couple Questions. How do I install America's Army (Overmatch) under cedega? I have the .exe file downloaded and sitting on my desktop. Just can't figure out how to install it.

When I go to install ElderScrolls IV Oblivion my computer has trouble reading the DVDrom. When I browse to it through nautilus I get a permissions denied error message. Through command prompt:

`cd /media/cdrom-1'

Error message is the same thing. Permissions denied. My brother suggested doing a sudo chmode command on it, but it didn't work. Any suggestions?

I believe America's Army is available natively for linux without cedega. I suspect your brother was on the right track, but it's chmod not chmode. can you post the output of these commands:

Code:
ls -l /media

and

cat /etc/fstab

America's Army

America's Army (Direct Conflict) or somthing along that name which is the second to latest version of AA is made native for linux, but Overmatch however is not!

I didn't know that there were other versions of AA I've never played it; I just don't like that it was developed by the army as part of their recruiting program. I figured Overmatch was an add on of some sort. Vice City is what I usually play in cedega. though I must admit I no longer pay them. did you sort out the problem with your dvd drive?

Oblivion

I downloaded Cedega, got Morrowind Elderscrolls III install and through much pain got oblivion on. But when I go to play oblivion i get a "Please insert game disk" prompt. Any solutions?

Yea, AA Just recently came out with OverMatch. They added a bunch of stuff. You can drive things, there is a rocket launcher now, graphics generally improved. It looks really sweet. I have the .exe file on my desktop just can't figure out how to install it.
