gaim question

In gaim can you have avatars (not sure if it's the right word, a pic the person you're chatting with can see, and you can see theirs)? And if so how do you enable this? Thanks!

you mean buddy icons probably

Go to your TOOLS-->Preferences--->Buddy Icons

Err... however I set my buddy icons by going through the REAL AIM but I don't see an option to set a buddy icon graphics in GAIM.

Gaim has one

and anyone not useing Gaim can't see them
Gaim only icons I guess

It is weird but all my buddies can see my buddy icons and I use GAIM frequently.

I remember setting my buddy icon in AIM in Windows XP and GAIM just carried it over (AOL Server remembered?).

Nope, all my friends use Windows XP with the standard AIM client from AOL. They are able to see my buddy icon.
