i seems to me that gaim cannot connect behind a firewall. i have a dual boot machine and i tested the ymessenger in windows and it works fine. ymessenger for linux aint finished yet ( and i dont think it ever will be ) so it would be a futile attempt to try it. problem is, i have tried gaim and with proxy, without, socks 4 and 5. nothing works. i mean all of them fail except for socks 5 option where it hangs on "connecting". if i try this several times, it crashes.

is this a known problem? has anyone else experienced this? does anybody have a solution that does not involve tunneling?

well I think that you have a proxy.I don't know whether gaim support proxy or not but before you use the proxy you should know the ip address and port of the proxy.Find this out by asking the system administrator.

well we do have a proxy. used gaim 0.64. i was under the impression that you CAN'T use socks without a proxy. i filled in the proper proxy values and port and username and passwd ( i know this works since i use those to make mozilla connect to the net. galeon works as well with those settings ). what am i doing wrong? TIA
