framebuffer questions

i recently installed slackware and am seeing the framebuffer in action for the first time. it makes the console so nice i want to use it exclusively.

my question is about putting a background image in your console (ie, no X). i did some googling and found some guides on enabling support for framebuffering... but nothing for how to actually set a background image. i already have framebuffering working.. i just need to know how to use it. i managed to (sort of) cat a bitmap to /dev/fb0 but of course the text background is still black, and the image slowly disappears as one types further. what do i need to do to do this properly? and this can be done on more than one of the virtual consoles, right? ie, i would want my image to show up on more than just tty1..

this page has some good screenshots of what i'd like to achieve:

I am not really into this kind of candy stuff. I tried it in the past out of curiosity, but I am not sure what the best way around would be *today*. However, if you want to research, you should be googling for "framebuffer boot splash", you will surely find lots of related info. Throw your distro name in the middle of the search, maybe there's a more specific guide on how to set it up.

ps. Your link doesn't work for me.
