Framebuffer causing a black screen

On my new Gentoo system, I can only use it through ssh. After a few
messages at boot, the screen flashes (i think the framebuffer) and the screen goes black. I have an ATI Rage 128 m4 with it's driver build directly into the kernel. I've tried setting video="aty128fb", video="vesafb" and some others. I had the framebuffer working on it at one time. I would like to be able to use the framebuffer. When the system is booted, I issue lspci -nnk and it shows for my graphics adapter that aty128fb is in use, any help please?

Yes, but I've been having this problem long before I even installed X, not sure that this would have anything to do with X, but here's my Xorg.0.log. I could be wrong. I use Gentoo, so when you're done installing, you do not have X until you follow the guide on X and emerge it. The only way to use my system was to ssh into it or after I had X, type in the console username: password: and then startx.
