Hi,
I am very new to Linux and have a webserver running that I now need to add Forum functionality. I have done a brief search on the internet, via google. No surprises I know. LOL.
My problem is I haven't found anything as yet or not in budget anyway. Looking for something cheap or free, my plan is for it to be used by the public and in a similar manner to this site.
If you know of anything or how it can be done please let me know.

If you visit forum.ManicGeek.com you will find a small forum which is running Beehive Forum software running on Ubuntu-Server 8.04. Beehive Forum software is written in PHP and uses MySQL for it's database. Beehive Forum software is an open source project so the software is free.
Beehive Forum will allow you to run a single forum or multiple forums with a single installation. It is actively maintained and there are new releases several times a year. The forum is quite mature and has many flexible options for administration. Posts can be in text or HTML with attachments and images.
The interface allows you to change look and feel of forum appearance on an individual user preference for styles and colors.
Before choosing your final package based upon a comparison do yourself a favor and check out the forum software website you choose to verify that the features that you want are indeed available. While the ForumMatrix.org site is a good one there may be changes to the package you select that are not reflected in the ForumMatrix.org database.
Using php and mysql (I think it works with other db's as well, never bothered to try).
Phpbb is also very famous for having lots and lots of security problems. If you go this way, make sure you use the latest version, keep it patched, and make sure you've got a file monitor like Aide or Samhain in place.
