fortune

I like the Linux 'fortune' program.

The Mint terminal has the option to display a fortune everytime you use it.
I tweaked it a bit so fortunes display better & added another 'cow' or two.
Code:
make auto-fortunes format correctly
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Desktop Settings: mintdesktop -> terminal -> Show fortune cookies

add the -n option
that way auto-fortunes format correctly

you will have to edit this file with root privlages

/usr/bin/mint-fortune
...
    esac
    /usr/games/fortune | $command -f $cow -n
}
...

I discovered more fortunes in my Linux Adventures.
Made some of my own...

Found 'fortunes-off' and the explorer that I am...

I do not know why this is even in repositories anymore.
It is not that I am offend but that 'fortunes-off' is USELESS!!!
The file is ENCRYPTED and no one knows how to decrypt it.

the '/usr/share/games/fortunes/off/art' file
Code:
K-engrq zbivrf ner nyy nyvxr ... gur bayl guvat gurl yrnir gb gur
vzntvangvba vf gur cybg.
%
Unzohet jnf snagnfgvp. Orgjrra gur juberf naq gur tebhcvrf bhe qvpxf
nyy whfg nobhg qebccrq bss.

I didn't get a very good translation on that. What do you suspect it is?

That's ROT13 not encryption. You can eyeball it easily enough. Or use tr

Code:
echo "fbzrguvat" | tr 'a-zA-Z' n-za-mN-ZA-M'
In Usenet and other contexts, off-color jokes were usually under ROT13 so that you had to make an effort to read them so as to avoid bothering certain types.

Talking fortune - decoded

FINALLY!

someone with an answer

FYI you left out a '
gave me a headache until I noticed it

I'll have to work really HARD to see anything in that, maybe after some practice...

now
Code:
fortune -o | tr 'a-zA-Z' 'n-za-mN-ZA-M'
works

WOW, some of those offensive fortuntes - can't see how most would offend, but in todays' world...

THANKS!
