font problem in Synaptic, ALT Linux Starterkit, SysVinit Xfce

Synaptic worked sort of ok after installation, it is a fairly old version and I noticed some features normally present were missing, such as viewing installed files in installed packages. Also does not have any terminal view/window.
Anyway the problem is that the output after installation is garbled as if fonts are wrong or missing.
I tried changing the fonts to some normal fonts I know are installed and working but that did not help. Synaptic works fine, just wondered if anyone has seen this behaviour. It started a day or two after installation, not sure what I did..

Not a big problem, I'm flying blind a bit anyway with this as all forums etc are in Russian. Localization works perfectly though (in my case Norwegian) and I really like the distro. I'm also learning Russian.

(The distro is kind of different - up to date with software and the latest kernels and yet they have kept things like Gdm - which seems to be a factor in the excellent localization as it is set from gdm. Also there are none of the dependency problems running another init than systemd you can see in systemd free derivatives of Debian and Arch (Artix). Networkmanager etc works no problem where in others they require workarounds and/or replacements. Fast and stable, I like it)

Just to be clear the 'problem' affects just the status window after Synaptic finishes an operation so not critical. I also have Gnome Software Center - that does not tell you anything about what it does ofc.
