I'm using Scribus since three years. My problem is I don't know what fonts to trust.
Having read a lot about fonts, I decided to use type1-fonts from Bitstream, delivered with CorelVentura for WinNT (I bought it somewhere around 1999. Age should not be a problem; from Scribus homepage: "Type 1 fonts before 1991 can cause problems").
Result: The produced pdf won't print, kghostview outputs "Embedded font uses undefined procedure RD" same for ND, 2 lines repeated lots of times. Finally: "this pdf does not conform to standard..."
Acroread 5 on Linux, 7 on WinXP views and prints fine, no error messages! Going to my local printer, it won't print. No messages.

I don't understand this - if these fonts are no good then what can I trust? Are type1 no good after all? Isn't Bitstream reliable? Using these fonts In Ventura, there weren't one single problem.
The only fonts that work fine are those with "Foundry: unknown" - font experts clearlly warns for such fonts!

A few lines from Scribus docs:
"Fundamentally, Scribus is really really fussy about fonts."
"Scribus does an initial "self-defense" test when starting to see if the available fonts have usable encodings, is scalable and has a correctly embedded PostScript name. Then, loading a document, Scribus uses freetype2 to do a more extensive check of the requested fonts to ensure freetype2 can access all the glyphs within the font. If freetype2 cannot read the glyphs correctly, then usage of that particular font is disabled by Scribus."

There is no error message from Scribus at all (loading it from console).

Use post-script fonts. They are garanteed to work.

Personally, I use scribus in FC4 and Ubuntu breezy with all the open-source fonts and all the ms core fonts with success. Including private fonts from www.cumberlandgames.com ... nothing wrong with the created pdf files.

I know. That's kind of the problem...
Type 1 is postscript - guaranteed to work.
Bitstream is a good Foundry - guaranteed to work.
Yet they don't?
And then, while I could buy a few fonts, I can't afford to buy all that I need. And I allready have 1000 fonts or more, all worked fine earlier???

Is there no fix for the problem - the .afm-files are plain text, could changing something in there help for instance?
Also, when my Bitstream type1 fonts doesn't work - how do I know what will work? Manually testing each and every one will take a month! Is there any better way to test fonts? Or some program that gives clearer error messages - kghostview only says some fonts are invalid, not which of them.
