Why didn't you install flashplugin from a Debian repository?

because it didn't work in firefox and epiphany plus it did that same thing when it was working
the flashplugin-nonfree repo isn't in the repos that come with the installation

are you saying that i should uninstall the flash player and re-install the nonfree version that was in the repos (the nonfree was not in the repo's that came with the debian install i had to add it myself) it's working in all the browsers it just can't co-exist with all the other stuff i have

i think i fixed it

i added the ubuntu natty narwall repositories to the software sources and installed "flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound" and i upgraded pulseaudio and alsa

the problem all along was that pulseaudio wasn't cooperating with flash so local software with sound wouldn't play whenever flash was running. how bout that, learn something new every day (in this case every two days)

i know it's not the suggested performance but i did another clean install and all i installed was the flashplayerplugin-nonfree package and nothing else, i didn't touch pulse audio, and skype works fine and flash player works fine aswell especially when they are both running at the same time.

by the way what is the point of having pulse audio? isn't alsa all you need? it's working out fine for me so far

Yes, i am saying it is a good advice to stick to the Debian repos.

Quote:
In most situations if you stick with one distribution you should use that and not mix packages from other distributions. Many common breakages arise due to people running a distribution and trying to install Debian packages from other distributions. The fact that they use the same formatting and name (.deb) does not make them immediately compatible.
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/de...g.en.html#s3.2

Though there are packages which will work (which are compatible) i don't use them. I am lazy (Hence i got no clue if you can or can not use the Ubuntu package for Debian. Debian has got a flashplugin, and there is no need to investigate that )I use the Debian repos, and am safe. And Debian comes with so many packages that i got doubts i miss anything.

It seems like a new vogue to add all kind of repos. I can't see a reason to do so.
Its not easy to break a Debian installation (be it stable, testing, mixed testing/unstable or unstable) as long one follows a few and simple rules.

which repos do you reccomend that i have and stick with, i haven't found a list of debian repos that is said to be stable and safe yet

and is installing pulseaudio really necessary?

The main repo which come with the install, plus volatile and security (also with install).
The ones who need might add "contrib" and "non-free".

Assuming one runs stable one could use backports.
http://backports.debian.org/

The other repo which is used often is the multimedia repo. That is not official, but used by a lot of users.
http://www.debian-multimedia.org/
Not that sure, as i don't use flash anymore, but in the past there was a slightly difference between flashplugin from the debian-contrib repo and the the flashplugin from the multimedia-repo.

All other repos are official Debian repos, and hence fully compatible.
To give an example: as far i can tell the aptosid forum does recommend to _not_ use the multimedia repo. I don't think i had big problems with it. Anyway: though often used, it is _not_ official.

bout pulseaudio i don't know. I ain't got it installed

i don't have it installed either and everything is working out fine, the only thing that i miss is the sound preferences utility

http://library.gnome.org/misc/releas...trol.png.en_GB

but the basic gnome mixer (when you choose preferences after right-clicking the speaker icon in the corner) is a bit confusing since there are several devices listed but the only thing i change regularly is the microphone input i have three) one is in the front of the computer another in the back and the third is a built-in mic on my webcam

and yes i don't have any need for pulse audio but setting sound devices are a little more advanced when setting preferences in media programs
