Firefox / Google News missing icons/bullets -> Locale problem? CSS problem? Something else?

I don't frequent Google News but when I visit lately -- besides the insanely long access times (is there something going on in the news? :^/ ) -- I can't help but wonder what the heck's happened to the web page. Bullets (I assume) next to the categories are missing and replaced by 2-3 text characters, what I assume are arrows (back to the top of the page maybe) are replaced by "keyboard_up_arrow"---which is rendered upside down.

The attached portion of one of the pages shows what I see.

Is there something amiss in my Firefox (69.0.1, sort of dated) version or is this a desktop environment/locale problem?

Or is Google reverting back to some "Best viewed using..." philosophy? (Mostly kidding there.)

TIA for any hints, ideas, etc.

Any addons installed, or non-standard configuration?
Or maybe system-wide ad/malware blockers?

Did you ever figure this out??? I am having the exact same issue. Ubuntu 18.04, Firefox 74.0 (64-bit).

Found the setting in FF. It's in Preferences > General > Languages & Appearance > Advanced > [check] Allow pages to choose their own fonts...

Worked for me. I've been trying to fix this on and off for months. Thanks to rnturn and ondoho who pointed me in the right direction.
