Firefox executable

I had a problem with Firefox .8x so I downloaded the sources for 1.0 and compiled them.
However the /usr/local/bin executable was pointing to the old firefox, so I deleted it and linked it to the new firefox's executable which I had stupidly installed in my home directory.
Now whenever I type firefox at the terminal, I get this:

cannot find mozilla runtime directory, exiting

Stupid newbie am I still, trying to do things I shouldn't

what do you suggest?

firefoxes executable should be in the firefox directory.

It shouldnt actually matter where firefox was installed, only if it is in your home directory then only you can run it. Try creating a symbolic link to the firefox executable in /usr/bin, but make sure the firefox executable is in the same directory as the rest of the firefox files
