Firefox 57.0.4 Web Browser

I have Linux Mint 17.3 loaded on an older ASUS laptop and running on a Verizon wireless network. Everything is working fine EXCEPT the Firefox web browser.

Linux Mint recently sent two new Firefox downloads, the latest being version 57.0.4, which I downloaded and installed; but I'm still experiencing S-L-O-W browser startups, which is very annoying.

Is anyone running the same OS/web browser happy with Firefox 57.0.4? Are there any tweaks to improve boot times?

Thanks for the assist, guys.

Have you tried starting it with the add-ons disabled? (see Help->Troubleshooting Information)

Don't panic. The reason for booting with the add-ons disabled was to see if it was any of them that was causing the slow launch. So, was the speed of the launch any different?

Right, now tell me why Firefox without the add-ons is horrible? That's before you close and restart Firefox which will put it back to how it was.

Something must have happened because it created folders on my Desktop, and my bookmarks were all screwed up. In any case, I just recovered to where I was (thanks to Redo Backup & Recovery).

I just tried Help > Troubleshooting, again, and restarted in Safe Mode; then I closed all windows compared the 2 startup times. The Safe Mode startup is maybe one second faster than the regular startup.

Okay, just tried it a few more times and Safe Mode is about 2 seconds faster, so...

2 questions:

1) Can I selectively tweak which add-ons are active on start-up?
2) What does Refresh Firefox do?

Thanks, hydrurga.

Now that shouldn't have happened (unless, for example, you have some weird add-ons installed) - it could be indicative of deeper problems.

You can read about refreshing Firefox here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...s-and-settings - if you go ahead with that then you will need to re-add your extensions and additional search engines etc. afterwards.

When you say "Closed all windows", are you opening Firefox with multiple windows? Because if so (and particularly if Javascript is involved) that may be causing the slow startup.

No. I only had one instance of Firefox open at a time.

I DID push the "Refresh Firefox" button at one point, and I believe that's when things went haywire, so after I do a clean backup, I'm going to be happy with a slightly slower browser.

I am quite happy with Firefox 57.x and find that it lives up to its billing, but many older add-ons are not compatible with it. Many older add-ons are being updated (No Script, for example, has issued a new compatible version).

Since I have several systems, including VMs, some running Firefox 57.x.x. and some running older Firefox versions, I have told Firefox sync not to sync add-ons for the time-being.
