Find out file information using smb client or any alternative command/client

Hello,

I have a share which is exposed using SMB protocol. The share is hosted on CentOS7.

I have samba package installed on a client VM, which is also CentOS7.
The samba package provides the smbcacls command which helps in obtaining ACL related info for files present on the share.

I have a requirement to explore all possible means & ways to gather any possible info for files present on the share, from the client CentOS 7 machine.

My question is - apart from smbcacls command, is there anything else that I can use to get any possible info about files hosted on the share?

Thanks
Bhushan

It's a shared disk. You have the same options available to you as you do for a local disk. You can write a script to get the files and parse them out, you can keep track of them in a database, etc., etc., etc. Many options.

Since you have a 'requirement', you must also have some actual GOAL you're trying to achieve, which you haven't posted here. Without knowing what you're trying to actually accomplish, it's hard to make suggestions.

The requirement is to gather as much data as possible, feed it into a machine learning algorithm & identify patterns or anomalies. Right now we are into the data gathering phase.

One point that I missed is that the share won't be mounted on the client CentOS VM. I just have share IP & access credentials.

So using smbcacls command, I can find out who the owner is for the file, ACL info. My intent of posting the question was to figure out if there is any other way to find out any data using other commands/methods that I'm not aware of.

Thanks

I'm open to mounting the shared drive on the client CentOS machine as well, if it helps in providing additional info that can't be fetched remotely.

So what you're essentially asking us to do, is provide free consulting services so you can figure out how to perform the job you were given??

This is YOUR 'requirement'; since you are being paid to perform this task, and there is a 'we' (ostensibly, co-workers), then you and your co-workers need to come up with your own ideas. Mount it, don't mount it, that's immaterial. The problem at hand is very simple; it is a disk and you want to know what's on it. That gives you a narrow list of things you can do.
