finally making the switch to linux

alright ive decided thats it time to move to linux. i dont play games on my desktop anymore cause of lack of time and ive begun to realize that i can do everything in linux that i can in winxp. anything that i cant i can just use wine. now i have some final questions before i do a complete format/install. ive pretty much set my mind to installing libranet (im a huge debian fan) but i am curious about a few things. i use adelphia power link cable internet and there isnt a sign in or anything for it (its always on). will i be able to just use it if libranet detects my eth card??? also, can i use debian woody discs to do the apt-cdrom add even if its libranet? i have 384 megs of ram and was wondering if i should go with kde or just choose to bipass it and go for blackbox or icewm? ummmm, do u recommend libranet for a smooth install? im not necessarily a noob at this cause i installed woody on an older laptop and its workin great but now im doin it on my main sys and i dont want it to trash anything. if anyone thinks of anything else to suggest or just has some words of advice, please post em!

once linux detects ur ethernet card, you should be able to set it at DHCP for ur internet to work if ur using a router or not (i think cable services use DHCP right?).

i have 1 gig of ram and im using fluxbox 0.9.8 just because i dont need all the extra crap that desktop environments use. i dont need a desktop because the fluxbox menu is easy to use and i even get my taskbar and system tray. so im all good.

If you want to _learn_ linux try Slackware. Next to SuSe its my favorite distro. If you just want to use linux as a Desktop OS then I guess almost any flavor will do. I'm fairly certain your libranet should work fine with your cable modem provided that the install can detect your ethernet card. As for your window manager, you could go with KDE and then if you don't like it, simply switch to one of the others (provided that you install them).

Since I have now experience with libranet or woody I can't answer that part of your question.
