was sort of experimenting, i have downloaded this file that is in the home/ronss/documents-opera-6-03-20020813.1-static-qt.i386.tar.gz

i then extract to - a created file/home/ronss/opera- and the tar.gz opera file was placed in this file as-opera-6.03-20020813.1-static.qt.i386

try "file <filename>" and you'll see if it's an ELF executable or a gzipped tar archive.
