So is anyone going to help me figure out what happened? I would like to know why this stuff disappeared so it doesn't happen again. I had a LOT of downloading to do in order to restore the stuff I had in that folder.

Then you would be surprised how easy it is too have an accident.
If you accidentally deleted the files, they should be in the wastebasket, unless Shift+Del was used. You did not do anything to the system, but were you doing something? Such as moving files around? Is it possible that you moved the files to the wrong place? I occasionally do that with careless drag-and-dropping. And of course, there is the possibility of a bug. I notice you are using the latest edition of Mint. Perhaps it has a bug in the DE that not many people have noticed yet.

Just some ideas.

Thank you for responding.

That's the weird thing about it. I haven't been doing anything that may have resulted in files getting deleted, including but not limited to dragging and dropping. The past couple days have been spent on browsing and email only.

Of course, it could be a bug. I just wish I knew how to get to the bottom of it. Is there an equivalent to /var/log/messages in the Ubuntu derivative distros?

I do not know about Ubuntu derivatives, but Debian's /var/log has records of many things, but I do not see a /var/log/messages. It is too late now, but one log I find very useful is .xsessions-errors. It might have been useful before logging out, unless it is a bug.

The whole thing is strange though.

Ok, thanks for the tip. I'll make sure to do that if it happens again. Hopefully it won't!

BTW, there's a "messages" log in Fedora.

Angry DEBIAN 9/10 - EVERITHING has Disappeared from my Downloads folder and others...

I have the same problem, My Downloads folder disappeared from one moment to another, while copying a file ISO from my Pendrive to the Downloads folder using Dolphin. The copy is complete OK, but then when trying Access the destination folder, Linux tells me that the Download folder does not exist ... wwwhaaatttt? horror.

This problem has already happened to me on 4 occasions with Linux Debian 9 and Debian 10. It's a mystery ... The Trash is empty ...

The first time, I thought about a Hard Disk (SSD) problem, I changed it ... soon the error reappears... My Downloads folder disappears. I thought of some intrusion, I have formatted and reinstalled the Linux 9 system but now with encryption... and what do you think, the problem has returned... goodbye Downloads and everything in that folder unfortunately I have put ... Same with Debian 10.

Common symptoms (may or may not be related):
1. I have temporarily put my user in sudoers.
2. Also, I have upgraded Linux, in which the latest version (apt upgrade) of the corresponding Kernel comes.
3. In 3 of 4 times the error has appeared, the folder is Downloads.
4. I have shared the Downloads folder with Virtual Windows systems.
5. Whenever the folder disappears, I DO NOT have the Windows VM active.
6. The folder simply disappears from Dolphin and may be related to the fact of having generated a Link from my folder Downloads the Dolphin Bookmarks. <- MOST LIKELY CAUSE
7. The Downloads folder disappears without you noticing and without warnings, all content is lost.
8. I've had the problem with folders other than Downloads, so I think it's something we're not seeing, maybe a MALWARE, I've done disk scan with tools without finding the cause.

My current system has:
- Linux debian 4.19.0-5-amd64 # 1 SMP Debian 4.19.37-5 + deb10u2 (2019-08-08) x86_64 GNU / Linux
- SSD Disk (WDC WDS480G2G0A)
- FileSystem XFS (also tested several times with EXT3 / 4)

I can't find the cause and I'm very disappointed in Debian ..., assuming it's a bug. this problem
It has cost me a lot of time and money, to the point of seeing myself in the obligation to install Windows on some computer (

I have been using Debian Linux since its inception as a user and then as an administrator ... It CANNOT be a problem of LAYER 8
--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. He puesto temporalmente a mi usuario en sudoers.

- Linux debian 4.19.0-5-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.19.37-5+deb10u2 (2019-08-08) x86_64 GNU/Linux
- Disco SSD (WDC WDS480G2G0A)

HELP PLEASE....

Atte.
Juan
