Error with xdm's configure script and missing pkg-config files

Hi,

I need to compile xdm (X display manager) from source (independently from other X software) and I get a problem running the configure script :
Code:
checking for XDM... configure: error: Package requirements (xmu x11 xau) were not met:

No package 'xmu' found
No package 'x11' found
No package 'xau' found
I have read pkg-config's man page and found that it relies on .pc files to inform the configure script about the installed libraries. I searched for those .pc files on my disk and I found none that deal with the problematic libraries (xmu, x11, xau). The distro is Gentoo, but I get the same result on a Debian.
Is it normal that there are no pkg-config files for the X-related libraries ?

Thanks in advance.
