emacs - special - question

hi,
there's something i cant find out.

if i use emacs in perl mode and use the variables
$Žand $` (PREMATCH and POSTMATCH)
they confuse the highlighting.
is there a way to \escape lines from highlighting without commenting them out?
if u have to write an app that uses these variables quite often its a real pain in the butt
cheers, jens
