emacs' html indentation

In a default RedHat 8.0 install of Emacs, I'm trying to edit some HTML. The mode seems to be working fine (I see menus and the "HTML" mode indication in the bottom of the buffer/window). However, Emacs/the mode refuses to indent -- everything stays aligned to the left side of the buffer. How can I get indentation in HTML mode?

If all else fails mark the whole document,
Alt-x indent-region
