edonkey 2k

i d/l'd the the ed2k-gui and the ed2k core. when i run the GUI it ask me for the localhost (which i left unchanged), the port (which i left unchanged), username and password (which i created via command line using the core. then i set the dir. to the core. Everytime i try to 'Go' or even "Quick Connect" i cannot connect. i've got it to the point where it says running, but i can't get connected.

I know that i need to supply more detail as to what error its giving me and what it says i need to do, but i don't have that available right now b/c i'm at work. If someone could please give me a couple of suggestions or some step-by-steps they took to config edonkey, i would really appreciate it.

I'll post more details when i get home if need be.

It's not an answer to your question but I'd like to recommend xmule (www.xmule.org) as an eDonkey client. At least it seems to be easier to configure.

Or LimeWire??

I used it on my mac and it sucked but I gave it a shot on Linux and it's a 100% performance improvement.

If you use apt-get, simply type:

apt-get install xmule

It's just like edonkey 2000

I have found mldonkey to be alot better than xmule. It connects to servers of other products like direct connect, bitorrent, etc . I also get a lot better success rate with mldonkey.

i'm determined to get ed2k to work... i have the gui (ed2k_gui) and i have the core (edonkey0.5.0). i set my username and pass in the core. When i run ed2k_gui i have these settings:
localhost
port 4663
*the username and pass i set
path: /edonkey0.5.0

then i spawn the core and it goes to "running" but when i try to "Go" i get an error that /ed2k/pref.met does not have username and pass. the problem is, i don't even have a pref.met in the ed2k dir.

i know this has been kinda rambled out, but does anyone have suggestions?

I think it a problem of file permission, you should try it first with root.
